The US Healthcare system is failing. 74 per cent of Americans have little confidence in the current administration's health care reform plans, 46 million Americans are without health insurance, and health care expenditure is rising at a rate of 7 per cent per year - three times the rate of inflation. In America, healthcare is a business focused increasingly on generating income for insurers and providers rather than providing care for its patients. The industry is supported by investors and private markets seeking to expand business and resist regulation, thus contributing to the higher cost, greater fragmentation and lessened public accountability of US health care. No other health care system resembles America's, and no other has such severe problems. Dr Arnold Relman is one of the most respected physicians and healthcare advocates in the USA. This book, based on sixty years' experience in medicine, represents the culmination of his life's work, and a clarion call not just to politicians and patients but to the medical profession to evolve a new structure for healthcare, based on voluntary private contracts between individuals and non-for-profit, multi-speciality groups of physicians.
