In The Ultimate Rottweiler, Second Edition, Editor Andrew Brace has recruited a star-studded cast of specialists to write the definitive book on the breed. For the first time in the history of the breed, experts from Germany, Britain, and the United States have pooled resources to give the most comprehensive coverage of the Rottweiler today. Starting with in-depth research into the origins and development of the breed, the experts go on to analyse the Breed Standard in detail. An acclaimed feature of The Ultimate Rottweiler is "The Judge's View", in which an American, British, and German judge make a pictorial critique of six different Rottweilers. The critical importance of training and socialisation is emphasised throughout the book, as well as detailed information on feeding, genetics, health care, and inherited conditions. There is also a special feature on breeding and rearing Rottweilers. The Ultimate Rottweiler, lavishly illustrated with more than 20!
0 colour photographs, is a "must-have" reference for the true Rottweiler enthusiast.
While it may be an attractive thought that the Rottweiler has a long and ancient history, with stories of the Roman Legions tramping through the Alpine passes accompanied by large black-and-tan dogs who fell out from the line of march in the Black Forest area, the truth is that we owe the Rottweiler to Germany and to German breeders operating at a very much later date than Roman times. It may or may not be true that the Mastiff-type dog, of which the Rottweiler is an example, originated in the Mediterranean area and spread from there into northern Europe. It probably got there a long time before the Romans, and the big Mastiff type was known in Britain and elsewhere in northern Europe long before the legions marched north. However, the Rottweiler certainly has one link back to the Romans and that is in its name. Breeds of dogs acquire their names from many different reasons. Some are named after their function; a small number after a person, often someone involved in their early development; but the vast majority take their names from a place or geographical area. The Rottweiler has taken its name from the town Rottweil in southern Germany, and it is probably true to say that the fame of the town worldwide stems from the breed of dog which bears its name.
