Why I Wrote the Book, and Why I Believe It Can Help
Because writing is an extension of ourselves, people are understandably sensitive about it. I wrote Why Does My Boss for all those who are feeling uneasy and insecure about their writing at work.
Like most things when you really get into them, writing involves at least as much craft as art: there are many "quick tricks" you can use to make your writing attractive and readable. Some involve better ways of expressing yourself; others keep you from distracting picky readers (and bosses) by committing errors of grammar, punctuation, and so forth. I've shared these tricks in the 20, mostly short, chapters of the book.
I've had years of experience as a reader of other people's business writing: I edit advertising materials, newsletter articles, annual reports, letters of complaint, whatever, for businesses and individuals on a freelance basis. Thus I have the opportunity to see the mistakes people make most often--it's a continuing learning experience. I also get to hear from managers about what drives them most crazy most often in their subordinates' writing. Both sets of experiences also inform Why Does My Boss.
I wrote the book the way I speak, in hopes it would be an easy read. I think it has the potential to ratchet up the writing level pretty painlessly for anyone who reads it. It's also an easy book to dip into--people tell me they read a chapter here, a chapter there, depending on their mood; and a comprehensive index makes it a useful reference tool.
Thank you for this opportunity to write about the book. Why Does My Boss, and the more important issue of writing well, are very close to my heart.
