Synopsis
What did it mean to Daniel Pearl when he declared, "I am Jewish"? What does it mean to many of the millions of Jews who have uttered the same phrase? Based on the last words of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl--who was murdered by terrorists in Pakistan during the recent war in Afghanistan--I AM JEWISH examines what this short statement means to Jewish people from all walks of life, from all around the world, in their own words. Through personal essays, theological statements, historical reflections, stories and memoirs, contributors--both famous Jews and average citizens--express what being Jewish means to them. We can't know what Daniel Pearl was thinking when he declared "I am Jewish," but his words now serve as an important springboard into an inspirational exploration of Jewish identity. Contributors include, Shimon Peres, Lord Greville Janner, Bernice Rubens, Maureen Lipman, Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, The Right Honourable The Lord Woolf and Senator Joseph Lieberman. The Editors - Judea and Ruth Pearl - are the parents of the late Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter, and cofounders of the Daniel Pearl Foundation.
