A full-scale Catholic refutation of the "Bible Alone" theory
I and the other contributors to this book wanted to provide a comprehensive, book-length refutation of the erroneous Protestant theory of sola scriptura (by Scriptura alone). The book's chapters fall into categories that critique sola scriptura from various angles. We provide the biblical, historical, patristic, and epistemological evidence that the Protestant "Bible only" approach is not what Christ taught, it's not what the Apostles or the early Church taught, nor, ironically, is it what the Bible itself teaches. Begining with my opening chapter (Sola Scriptura: A Blueprint for Anarchy), that gives a general overview of the issue, editor Bob Sungenis and the rest of the contributors give detailed critiques from every conceivable angle. At the end of the book are two written debates on the sola scriptura between me and Protestant author and Reformed Protestant apologist Doug Jones (editor of "Credenda/Agenda" magazine). This interchange acts as a practical demonstration of many of the arguments we Catholics make in the book. The issue of authority is central to the question of what divides Catholics and Protestants. It's our hope that this book will help advance the cause of truth and, by God's grace, draw many away from unbiblical "traditions of men," such as sola scriptura, and into the fullness of Christianity found in the One True Church, established by Christ. I sincerely encourage Protestants to read this book and ponder its case with an open mind.
