Statistical analysis is increasingly being recognized as a fundamental quantitative skill for all biology students to master. This accessible text provides the necessary foundation for them to do just that. Glover and Mitchell emphasize the application of statistics using examples from many areas of the life sciences, but without sacrificing theoretical rigor. Along with standard parametric analyses, many examples of nonparametric analysis are incorporated to better simulate the situations that undergraduates encounter in their own research projects and to accommodate those readers with more modest backgrounds in mathematics. A large number of end-of-chapter problems provide ample opportunities to apply the concepts presented in the text.

Appendices provide tables and references to most popular statistical analysis software (eg. Minitab, Statview, SAS and SPSS).
A supporting web page provides additional problems, answers to text problems and additional instructional resources.
Each chapter includes a broad set of problems with varying degrees of difficulty. Selected answers are at the end of the book with the rationale and skill hints provided.
This text emphasizes the relationship between probability, probability distributions, and hypothesis testing.
Interesting and easily understood examples are included with each concept.
End-of-chapter problems are randomized within each chapter to require students to choose the appropriate analysis. Many undergraduate texts present a concept or test and immediately give all the problems that can be solved by that technique. This approach prevents students from having to make the real life decision about the appropriate analysis. The authors believe this decision making is a critical skill in the introduction of statistical analysis and have provided a large number of opportunities to practive and develop this skill.
