From the Author

This book can help you find new ways to care for yourself.
The inspiration for this book came to me while I was asleep. One day about 5 years ago, I woke up with an exceptionally clear mind and with a clear vision that somebody had to write a book that would gather together all the information about what alternative healing modalities could offer for mental health concerns. I also knew that I was going to be the one to do it, because I recognized that it was the kind of monumental task that you can't ask anybody else to do for you. On that morning, it ocurred to me that the mental health aspect of holistic healing had been lost in all the excitement over how the mind can affect the body. Nobody was talking about how the body affects the mind, and how the body and mind work together in more compex ways than the health blurbs on the evening news would indicate.

Yet there it was, when I started to look: in every one of the healing arts were little or big gems of information about how people with mental health concerns might find relief. These techniques might work in addition to psychotherapy and medication or instead of medication and therapy, in some cases. And nobody was talking about this crucial information. And they still aren't, but I hope that you will start talking about it, and that we can all raise our voices enough to be heard by researchers who can do good outcome studies, and by insurance companies and policymakers who decide what kind of health care we can have access to.

I have been a psychotherapist for about 15 years, and in the years leading up to that morning when I began this project, I had increasingly been referring my clients to homeopaths, applied kinesiologists, nutritionists, clinical ecologists and massage therapists. And these adjunctive treatments helped them in ways that psychotherapy alone was not doing. This usually ocurred without side effects, and had the benefit of helping other areas of the person's health in addition to the problem for which they had sought help.

In the book I tell about my own struggles with depression, and how several holistic healing modalities worked for me.

The Whole Mind gives you all of the information you need to inform yourself of your choices. Keep in mind that most people don't even know that there are any choices, other than psychotherapy and medication, when it comes to mental health care. So a book that pulls together 36 different healing modalities, and has experts in each of those professions write specific information that you need to decide how to use those modalities was very much needed. It is done now, after 5 years of hard work, and I am very proud to offer it to you. I hope that this information can lead you to the help that you or a loved one is looking for.

I would love to hear from you about your own experiences in using these new (and ancient) forms of health care for achieving emotional wellness. I know what it is like to be searching for help in all the usual places, and not finding it. I offer you this book so that you can start searching in some other places where your answers might be.
