Synopsis
Over the last two years, Lili Almog has made extensive visits to nuns in three different Carmelite monasteries-one in Mount Carmel in Haifa, Israel, where the order was founded and assumed its name in the year 1200; the first Carmelite monastery in the United States, in Port Tobacco, MD; and one located at the birthplace of Jesus, Bethlehem, Palestine. The result of this work, Perfect Intimacy, is an experience of the cloistered world these nuns live in, and a documentation of their state of mind, relationship with God, and spiritual identity. It is a continuation of Almog's ongoing attempt to explore women and their private spaces.
Almog's empathetic and poignant studies capture the individuality of her subjects, their enduring dignity, and their sense of self-worth-which belies the collective conformity of monastic life. The economy of style in Almog's photographic composition, a limited color palette, and an emphasis on just a few pictorial components correspond aptly with the chaste and austere way of life in the monastery. Almog's portraits achieve an emblematic quality, reverberating with and alluding to the intensity found in abundance in religious iconography. About the Author
Lili Almog has exhibited in solo and group shows at Tel Aviv Museum of Art; SF MoMA; the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art, Israel; the Alternative Museum, New York; Griffin Museum, Massachusetts; Ffotogallery, UK; Museet for Fotokunst, Denmark; Museé de la Photographie, Belgium; Andrea Meislin Gallery, New York; and Photographers' Place, London, among others. Almog's work is included in the collections of the SF MoMA, the Victoria and Albert Museum, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Museé de la Photographie, Belgium, and Museet for Fotokunst, Denmark, as well as in numerous private collections. Almog's released her first monograph, Perfect Intimacy, with powerHouse Books in 2006.

Condition: Very Good. Hardcover, 127 pages. Lili Almog's color photos taken at three Carmelite monasteries (of nuns) are revealing of their faith. The sisters showing their distinctive profession crucifixes (normally worn hidden under their scapulars, and pinned to their beds when they go to sleep) are revealing their personal symbols of "perfect intimacy." And the statues and/or holy cards of our holy mother St. Teresa, our holy father St. John of the Cross, St. Therese, and St. Joseph make Carmelites feel right at home. The monasteries are also significant: they are on Mt. Carmel (Haifa) and in Bethlehem--founded by Sister Miriam, "the little Arab"; and in Port Tobacco, Maryland, whose community is the oldest and first Discalced Carmelite convent founded in the US. The spartan surroundings emphasize the importance of the nuns' relationship with God. The photos of the sisters revealing their profession crucifixes, which they wear near their hearts and pin to their beds when going to sleep, I found especially moving. Almog's photos are neither stilted nor rigid, but reminiscent of the photos that St. Therese's sister Celine took of her!
