Often our consumer culture has indulged passion indiscriminately. But the liberating theme of The River Within is that passion and Christian spirituality belong hand in hand. Jesus promised God's life at the core of our being like a river within us. This flowing of God's life is the source of our longings and drives, our passion for everything from sex to solitude and from hiking to prayer.

Its a bit scary offering a book like this! It is the fruit of many years of my own wrestling and searching, and the autobiographical signs show up regularly. But I hope that The River Within will generate dialogue about how we can deepen our spiritual integration through learning to live healthy, passionate lives.

The book is written to Evangelical Christians because that is my background and because I sense that many Evangelicals are searching for more than just a spirituality of performance and conformity. But there are many beyond the Evangelical community who have had contact with Christians or who have left Christianity who might find the book very helpful too. I have tried to write with as little religious jargon as possible so that anyone can read it and see a healthy and full-bodied presentation of the heart of our Christian experience.
