Review

Even if you've used Visual Basic before, chances are you'll want to review its capabilities for creating state-of-the-art distributed applications on the Windows platform before attempting to pass Microsoft's Visual Basic 6 Distributed certification test (Exam 70-175). MSCD Visual Basic 6 Distributed Exam Cram provides a tour of what VB can offer when it comes to creating web-based, multi-tiered applications. This book is certainly an invaluable guide to high-end VB.

This title succeeds on several levels. First, it provides a quick-start to understanding the way Microsoft partitions application functionality between clients and servers in distributed multi-tiered applications. (Chapters here concentrate on presentation services, user services and data services.) There's a good deal of hands-on information on essential subjects like configuring MTS and remote objects with DCOMCNFG.EXE. The author also shows you how to create MTS-enabled DCOM objects using VB. (These objects will connect to a database on the back-end using ADO and with the transaction and resource-management of MTS, you can create highly scaleable applications.)

The emphasis here is on using VB to create web-based interfaces, not standalone clients. (There's help here with using VB WebClasses-for delivering HTML on-the-fly with ASPs, and how to use DHMTL with Internet Explorer.) Clearly, Visual Basic used in a distributed setting requires an entirely new way to think about programming. This book shows you what you need to get started. Practice questions and a full-length test help you prepare for the certification exam.

Even if you are not preparing for this exam, MSCD Visual Basic 6 Distributed Exam Cram functions nicely as a compact review of how to use VB for building multi-component web-based applications. Read this book to prepare for Microsoft certification, as well as to get a head-start to some of most advanced VB programming strategies. --Richard Dragan, Amazon.com
