Author Comment
I was dismayed to learn that there are, indeed, inaccuracies in one of the scripts to be found in Chapter 8. I apologize to any readers of my book if this has caused any difficulty. I did take the opportunity to scan the remainder of the book. I did NOT find "incorrect sample codes everywhere in the book" as the reader comment would imply. I want to point out that my use of code scripts in the book appear in four different "flavors": (1) Complete, working scripts. (2) Excerpts from working scripts. (3) Pseudocode, and finally: (4) Conjectural code used to anticipate Oracle's plan of action when version 8.1 is released. The last category was extensively used when discussing "future features" for Oracle 8.1 (a rather tenuous discussion when concrete syntax has not been published). I took every effort to point out which type of script was used where. This is first, and foremost, a design book. The scripts appear merely to support the concepts described in the book and not the other way around. Understandably, many readers are seeking a text that gives dozens of working scripts so that they can become immediately productive. If this is the aim then I suggest "The Oracle8 Black Book" by Mike Ault. "High Performance Oracle8 Object-Oriented Design" is intended for those individuals whose responsibility it is to take a new project into the object-relational paradigm using Oracle8. In other words, project leaders, database designers, analysts, and so on.
This is a comprehensive guide to the new obj ect-oriented features of Oracle8, including user-defined dat a types, pointers to rows, aggregate objects, and methods to fuse data and behaviours '
