Still the best book of its kind around... Worthwhile having either at home or on board The Gaffers Log At last, a book on wind or weather forecasting that does not require the mind of a meteorologist to grasp. It does not go into deep detail; it says what is needed to be said clearly and concisely; it has reference tables, and it is all supplemented by fine photography. It is a book that is completely understandable. Sailing and Yachting Instant Wind Forecasting is Alan Watts' follow up to his popular Instant Weather Forecasting. Like his other weather reference guide, this book allows weather-watchers to compare the sky they see in front of them to one of the book's several color photos. When you find a matching sky, read the accompanying text to find out what to expect from the day. Watts' detailed explanations also offer variations for coastal and inland sailing, pre-race planning and two pages dealing specifically with winds over the Great Lakes. The author, a former meteorologist, is the first to admit that it's rather risky to compartmentalize wind conditions. Instant Wind Forecasting won't make you an instant America's Cup contender. About the Author
Alan Watts, one-time professional meteorologist, has spent considerable time studying wind changes and short-term alterations in the weather. This, combined with his enthusiasm for sailing which began with the sea scouts, led to his first book.
