Essays reflect wide range of job searches
Hi, I'm Victoria Olsen. I edited this book with Christina Boufis.
When Christina and I were new Ph.D.s on the academic job market we found that everyone offered us advice on how to get a job, but few people besides close friends felt secure enough to share their own experiences and feelings about the process. Academic jobs (especially tenure-track ones) for Ph.D.s are incredibly competitive now in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Sciences (we limited our selection of essays to these fields, in part because professions like Law, Medicine, and Engineering have very different job markets and demands). We put together our book specifically to fill a need: the need for often isolated job seekers to hear from one another and share their stories. We let our contributors say what they wanted to say, which is why the essays are admittedly contradictory. We wanted to reflect the diversity and range of experiences in this tight market.
Some of the essays are funny; some of the essays are sad. Some contributors have tenure-track jobs, and some don't. Some, including Christina and myself, have left the academy to pursue new careers. Although the academic job market is admittedly depressing right now (and that is bound to be reflected in the book), we find our contributors' perseverance, resilience, and candor both inspiring and encouraging.
We wanted to open up discussion about the job market, and it seems that we already have. Thanks for your interest in this book, and best of luck with your own career, wherever it takes you.
