Whether you are an experienced clinician or a newly graduated professional, today's changing economic environment can make the business of practice seem especially daunting. This indispensable manual is based on a simple idea: In a consolidating health care world, you cannot (and don't have to!) go it alone.
Demonstrating that collaboration is the key to successful, quality-oriented private practice, the book provides the concrete information you need to affiliate with a group practice for the first time, expand an existing group practice, or conceive and build a practice venture from the ground up. With a wealth of hands-on exercises and extensive interviews with leaders in the field, Simon Budman and Brett Steenbarger help you to take greater control of your career and make crucial decisions for your professional future. This book will be of value to both practitioners and students in a full range of mental health fields.

"Anticipating the decline of solo practice, behavioral health practitioners have stampeded into group practices, only to find to their dismay that a poorly constructed group practice has little attraction to the purchasers of health care. Budman and Steenbarger have conducted an intensive investigation of flourishing group practices, and have brilliantly dissected the components leading to their success. These elements are presented here in practical, doable steps. Stop--do not join or attempt to form a group practice until you have read this book! It may mean the difference between whether or not you are still in practice five years from now." --Nicholas Cummings, PhD, ScD, President, Foundation for Behavioral Health, Former President, American Psychological Association "The behavioral health field is rapidly moving toward group practices and integrated delivery systems, making it increasingly difficult for the lone practitioner to survive. Budman and Steenbarger's book offers the practicing professional the knowledge and expertise needed to survive. This guide will serve readers as an invaluable tool and reference as they move into an uncertain future. I highly recommend the book for clinicians in all phases of their practice growth." --Richard S. Edley, PhD, Executive Vice President, Managed Networks of America "This is a useful read for anyone who plans to make a living as a mental health professional....here is a soup-to-nuts description of the business of professional practice collaboration in mental health....this text offers a great deal of information in an accessible and interesting format. In the end it does not matter if you want to join, beat, or ignore them. If you want to get the facts about the business of practice, this is a good book for you." --"International Journal of Group Psychotherapy" "This book will have a place on my desk close to DSM-IV and the "Physicians' Desk Reference"; it is that useful for clinical practice in the late 1990s....A major and very thoughtful section of the book deals with designing collaborative clinical services. That is the part of the book that gets it on my desk....Budman and Steenbarger's book is helpful, whether one takes the direction they recommend or another route to collaborative practice. The "Essential Guide to Group Practice in Mental Health" is must reading for anyone who subscribes to "Psychiatric Services,"" --"Psychiatric Services"
A "consultant in a book" for those joining/forming a group
Our goal was to create a comprehensive resource for those interested in joining or forming a group practice. Having developed an 80 member network by trial and error, I discovered that there are few guideposts for creating viable groups. This is particularly the case for solo clinicians who wish to affiliate with colleagues, but still retain their independence. We wanted to show these clinicians that new organizational structures allow them to blend the best of independent, solo practice with the collaborative power of large, multispecialty groups.
The "Essential Guide" takes readers through a developmental process, from conceptualizing a group, creating its legal organization, and securing its financing to building its information system, crafting its marketing plan, and organizing its clinical services. "Readers Resources" in each chapter illustrate major themes by providing interactive exercises and interviews with established groups. The text's central idea is that the current challenges of health care economics can best be met through multispecialty collaboration, whether one plans to work within or apart from managed care.
