Synopsis

This text discusses the Double Ball Bar (DBB) method of determining the accuracy of NC machine tools. The DBB measuring system and evaluation method can be used to determine geometrical and path-dependent positioning errors on numerically-controlled machine tools and industrial robots. The DBB measures all deviations from the ideal path during the execution of a programmed circle. The deviations are evaluated through an interface card and with a program on an IBM XT or AT compatible personal computer, and can be graphically illustrated through a plotter. The resulting diagrams provide information on the static and dynamic accuracy of the machine. Movements in space can be quickly and exactly determined with an accuracy of 0.5 to 1.0 um using the DBB method. It is therefore a valuable aid for quality control and quality assurance of machine tools and industrial robots.
