Walter Winchell was the forefather of the gossip columnists. It was his excited discovery that led to the creation and the publication of this book. He was the first to find that the public curiosity about the authentically great and famous is exceeded by a vast itch to know all about the truly insignificant. In his frenzy to make the most of this discovery, Winchell forced the doors of the secret lives of every defenceless man or woman who had the misfortune to come within his deadly range. It was inevitable that, if ever Winchell were to come to judgement in a book, that book would be a cruel one. The Secret Life of Walter Winchell is a complete account of the inner life of Winchell and it is therefore a very cruel book. When first published the author of this book was attacked and beaten by three hired thugs. Its primary source of information and its publisher each spent five years in prison for their participation. It also resulted in the US Supreme Court's Roth obscenity decision. It was a daring book for its time and for Stuart Lyle, a working journalist who defied the most powerful newspaperman in history. This book marked the beginning of the fall of Walter Winchell.
This new edition includes an introduction from the author that provides historical context and explains the cultural significance of his work.Besides being the name behind Kensington's successful gambling imprint, Lyle Stuart--legendary for his winning history at the table--was a world champion Baccarat player who has won hundreds of high-stakes games and championships. He was a noted gambling authority who was often called on to help casinos protect themselves from card cheats and cons. He died in 2006.
