When the recreation center burns down in the Arctic Alaskan town of Chukchi, killing eight people, including the town's basketball star and the police chief, it looks like arson. Did someone want Chief Silver dead, or could a jealous ex-boyfriend be responsible?
A native of Chukchi, but adopted and raised in Anchorage, State Trooper Nathan Active is regarded as almost white by the Inupiat residents of the village. Even after being posted there for several years, he still doesn't feel entirely at home in their world. But with the police chief gone and so many people dead, the pressure is on him and his fellow Troopers to identify the arsonist and bring him to justice.
The investigation takes Active from Chukchi to the tiny village of Cape Goodwin, famous in the Arctic for twins, polar bears, and schizophrenia, and to Barrow, the northernmost city in Alaska. To solve the mystery, he must figure out what connects the arson to a faceless body he and his girlfriend discovered while camping on a remote lake, to a polar bear poaching scheme, and to a year-old fatal plane crash in the Brooks Range.
