This manual describes the X Network Protocol, which underlies all software for Version 11 of the X Window System. It not only provides a practical demonstration of what is involved in a client session, but also an extensive set of reference pages for each protocol request and event. This fourth edition includes protocol clarifications of X11 Release 6 and can be used with any release of X.

This book provides a complete reference to the X Network Protocol, the protocol with which computers communicate information between the X Window System server and X clients. This edition covers the Release 6 X Consortium standard. This manual is intended for server implementors, client-library programmers, and application programmers who want to increase their knowledge of the underlying principles of the X Window System. The manual is divided into three major parts: . Part One provides a conceptual introduction to the X protocol. It describes the role of the server and the clients, and demonstrates the network transactions that take place during a minimal client session. Part Two contains an extensive set of reference pages for each protocol request and event. It is a reformatted version of the X Consortium's official X protocol specification for Release 6. All material from the original document is present in this manual, but it is reorganized into reference pages to provide greater ease of access. Part Three consists of several appendices describing particular parts of the X protocol. The appendices also include various cross-reference and quick reference aids.
