Joan Blackmore has been working with dogs all her life. She owned her first dog - a Bull Terrier - at 11 years of age, and nine years later qualified another Bull Terrier CDX at working trials. Joan bred, showed and trained Bull Terriers until 1963, when she began her long and successful association with Rottweilers. Her first Rottweiler Emil Blackforest (Panzer), under her tutelage, also qualified for the coveted CDX. Joan is a past-President and currently Chairman of the Rottweiler Club of Great Britain. She is a show judge of international standing and judged Rottweilers at Crufts in 1982. Joan has imported six German Rottweilers into Britain over the years, including Bulli v.c. Waldequelle. As well as breeding and judging her Rottweilers, Joan is also an extremely successful trainer of dogs for film and television with over 3,000 parts credited over the past 23 years.
The Rottweiler is a very interesting and rewarding dog - but only for certain types of human temperament. The powerful frame and equally powerful mind of this breed is not to be taken on without a lot of thought and a real interest in the dog itself. The males can reach up to 27in (69cm) at the shoulder and can weigh over 125lb (57kg), so with a breed like this you must be sure that you have the dog under control at all times and insist that it uses its mind and strength for you and not against you. A Rottweiler on your side is a wonderful animal, a Rottweiler working against you is the exact opposite. This breed is also expensive to maintain. They need good quality food and have large appetites, so keep this firmly in mind: be sure that you can afford to feed and house such a large dog, and that you have a suitable, well-fenced garden or yard. Nervous people looking for a cheap burglar alarm will find it better to consult a firm of security lock specialists, since an untrained Rottweiler can do a lot more damage to your home than the average burglar!
