I'm pleased that both younger and older readers enjoy this book. I found the original tale,"The Hedley Kew," in More English Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs. I liked the idea of trickster as form changer and was interested in using the the "beast" as a metaphor for other "beasts" who pop up throughout our lives. Birdie's attitude toward him and toward the situation in which she finds herself, directly affects a happy ending. In the same way, how we choose to confront our "beasts" has everything to do with the quality of our lives.
