The genesis of the book was a response to a deep unrelenting need to uncover what I always knew intrinsically to be true, that people are not simply the sum of their experiences and behaviors, thus not the problems they have. I felt that if I could establish my theory in lay terms and illustrate it in practical examples, I would have a precious and necessary gift to offer the world.

The first person I shared my idea with was my mentor Dr. Kenneth Blanchard, co-author of the One Minute Manager and most recently Gung Ho! Ken embraced the idea and coached me through the process of unpacking my ideas. He also wrote the forward to my book. Here is an excerpt: "If we all could internalize the simple truths in this book, the world we live in and the organizations in which we work would be better places. We would all finally understand that God does not make junk. People are beautiful, they're just not perfect..."

I realized I had a worthwhile topic when people responded with the hope that at last there might be a reliable way of rescuing the world from the intoxicity of "Playing the blame game!" It does no good to blame people for what goes wrong in our lives nor does it benefit us to hate ourselves for coming up short. We do better when we marshal our resources to attack the problem instead of other people and/or ourselves.
