From the Author

Internet Developer's Dream Come True...
I wrote this book because a few years ago, I could've used a book like this.

Instead of writing yet another survey of product abstracts (which I find utterly useless), I wanted to write a book with useful information that goes a step beyond helping you to understand and program existing software and architectures. "Databases on the Web" provides a solid foundation for you to comprehend the big picture and how all the little pieces fit together to form the whole.

The book includes source code in Perl, Java, and C, so you get a good sampling of all the languages used. It discusses different architectures: two-tier, three-tier; and what that means to Web-based development. It introduces a classification for middleware and explains how products fit in place between client and server software.

Want to know why C is faster than Perl? Or when Perl can actually be faster than C? What about the pros and cons of using CGI? Alternatives to CGI programming? The difference between FastCGI and CGI? The difference among CGI, FastCGI, and Web server APIs? Read it in the book!

Optimization and security are two topics of most importance to most of us developers. Because of this, "Databases on the Web" includes discussions on optimization and securing every aspect of a Web-based application, from channel encryption (SSL) to educating the users, to Java's built-in security, to expediting SQL queries.

It also has a CD chock full of cool software, including Perl itself, template-based Web development tools, and a demo version of Microsoft's Visual J++.

Who knows, I might get to do a second edition!
