This enduring biography of the popular writer begins with Ferber's last years in New York City, exploring the setting in which she did all of her great writing. Diaries, copious correspondence, and the cooperation of distinguished living friends have resulted in a rich portrait of a period and a literary circle not yet fully documented, and an insightful engaging analysis of a woman writer highly influential in the shaping of twentieth century America.

This biography of Edna Ferber tells the story of the author's life and career. Edna Ferber was a best-selling author in America from the 1920s to the 1950s. Eleven of her novels were made into Hollywood films including "Giant", starring James Dean, Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor. Her work and voice had enormous political influence: she was one of the most outspoken women of that or any other day. The state of Wisconsin continues to pay tribute to her as a leading advocate for nature consevancy and the dangers of deforestation whose mark is still felt today. She was a zealous crusader for children's rights in the workplace. And then, of course, there is the glamour of her social set: Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein, Jerome Kern, and her longtime collaborator, George S. Kaufman.
