Updates a similar work published in 1991, to account for the increased strength of the United Nations as apparent in the war against Iraq, and the official demise of the Soviet Union. Primarily recommends how the US government can work with other governments to keep restless natives in line.

Synopsis
The end of the Cold War and the disssolution of the Soviet Union demand that the United States rethink its security policy. This volume examines what the US response should be to the evolving opportunity to strengthen collective security, and also analyses institutional mechanisms in the United Nations and in regional organisations that exist to deal with threats to the peace. The numerous theoretical and practical problems of guaranteeing international security in the 1990s provide the substance for analysis by leading scholars, many of whom also have had distinguished careers within international secretariats.
