From the Author:
Why we wrote this book.
In March 1996, Emily and I were preparing a class on Internet public relations for the University of Califonia, Davis. Looking for required course reading material, we discovered a number of Internet marketing books. However, these books focused exclusively on selling products or services while paying little, if any, attention to the most fundamental interaction a business faces on the Internet: communicating with its publics through an image-building public relations strategy. Furthermore, most of these books didn't reflect the in-the-trenches, hands-on experiences we had. Most often they were written from the perspective of career authors, consultants promoting their services, and professional seminar and conference speakers.

So in the process of putting the course together, in April 1996 we also created a book proposal. The book would focus on Internet business communication to lay the foundation for advertising, marketing, and sales efforts over the Internet. It would draw upon each of our 10+ years of respective experience with the Internet and PR. It would make any technical issues easy to understand and even fun to read. It would highlight long-term Internet communication strategies, avoiding low-level issues like browser versions and other technologies that grow stale seemingly every month. Instead of a CD-ROM, it would have a complimentary Web site, developed and maintained by the authors, that would demonstrate principles in the book and keep readers up-to-date.

Twenty months later -- after a lot of revisions, edits, and late nights -- the book has finally arrived, as promised! It still lives up to our original goals and objectives, which we feel still make it unique for its market.
