Synopsis
This textbook covers the fundamentals of library and information science courses. The author aims to offer library and information science students and professionals the background and techniques needed to meet today's and tomorrow's challenges. It begins with a discussion of the practice of librarianship, and moves on to address the place of libraries within the broader perspective of the information structure, the development of information science, the growth of information technologies, and information policies in libraries. The various types of libraries and the major organizational issues they face are discussed. The appendices include: the Association of Research Libraries Statement on Intellectual Property; a bill of rights and responsibilites for electronic learners; and encyclopedias and dictionaries in library and information science.

About the Author
Richard E. Rubin served as Director of the School of Library and Information Science at Kent State University, Kent, Ohio from 1999–2010, and subsequently became Associate Provost for Extended (Online) Education at KSU until his retirement in 2013.. Dr Rubin is the author of numerous publications.
