Book Sale Royalties go to the Elephant Relocation Project
Once, the African elephant ranged from the Mediterranean coast to the Cape of Good Hope. Herds trekked across thousands of miles in great migrations. However, in the 1980s, elephant poaching was rampant in much of Africa. As many as 300 animals a day were slaughtered for their ivory tusks.
Now there are sparse elephant populations concentrated mainly in the least accessible central regions of the continent.
When the major trading nations of the world agreed to end the ivory trade, the price plummeted and poaching stopped. Rarely has such a massive threat to a species' survival evaporated so quickly once the proper action was taken.
The ivory ban was a significant victory, but the cause of the elephant has not yet been won. Human encroachment on elephant habitat continues to threaten the elephant's survival. With threats of poaching resuming, the late 1990s will decide the fate of the elephants.
This book, featuring text by some of the world's leading authorities on the African elephant and more than 100 color pictures, is a celebration of a magnificent animal, a warning of its possible destruction and a plea for its preservation.
The royalties from the sale of this book will be directed through the International Wildlife Coalition toward the expansion of the Elephant Relocation Project in Marakele National Park.
