"The paintings depict scenes of Sapp's boyhood on a reservation in Saskatchewan. Thickly applied paint daubs and lines richly texture canvases that portray pow-wow scenes: a bright red shirt, Nokum's white braids or the vivid, blue sky punctuate the mostly earthy hues for a striking contrast." (Publishers Weekly)

Renowned Native American painter Allen Sapp's inspired and stunning artwork beautifully complement this story of a young Native Indian boy preparing for his first powwow. The young boy's Nokum -- his beloved grandmother -- guides him through the events of the day and helps him to understand what the singing and dancing are about. David Bouchard's rhythmic and informative text is based on remembrances from Allen Sapp's childhood. Allen Sapp is a Native American painter who grew up on the Red Pheasant Reserve in the 1930s, and now lives and works in nearby North Battleford, Saskatchewan. He is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and has held exhibitions across Canada, the US and Europe. He has won many awards including the Saskatchewan Order of Merit (1985) and is an Officer of the Order of Canada. Three of his paintings were selected for UNICEF's 1996 Christmas card series, to celebrate the organization's fiftieth anniversary.
