World War I had ended; peace was here at last. Wandervögel (Tramping Birds), members of Germany's nonpolitical youth groups, were once again free to explore the countryside. With rucksacks on their backs and songs on their lips, they tramped from village to village and from city to city. While on the road, they enjoyed camaraderie, learned self-sufficiency, delved into folklore, and had many cultural experiences. Kurt, a young adventurous teenager from Berlin, had been a Wandervogel. His diary, in which he chronicled his 1920/1921 amazing travel experiences in pictures and in words - often witty, sometimes pensive - did not come to light until close to a hundred years later, when his daughter, the author of this book, found it in an old box in the attic and decided it would make delightful reading for young people as well as adults.

About the Author

Eva R. Priestley, born in Berlin, Germany, came to The United States in 1954, as the young bride of an American soldier. They settled in New Jersey, where they raised two daughters. In later years, Eva decided to write. Eventually, at least seventy of her stories, some anecdotes included, were published in newspapers and magazines. Why not write books? Indeed, why not? So ... A Girl Named Eva - A Memoir came into being. This was followed by Eva, Find Your Song - A Memoir, then by Travels With My Sister and Circles of Friendship - Circles of Love. Now, Rambling Birds, her fifth book is here. And ... a sixth book is already in the works. Since Eva is also the creative writing teacher at local senior centers, her days are full.
