Dr. James R. Fury and Dr. Lawrence A. Watson are Clinical Psychologists. They have been treating patients of all ages and for a variety of psychological, emotional, and behavioral difficulties for nearly 60 years combined. They have treated patients for a wide range of diagnoses including depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and perhaps the Grand Mammy of them all, borderline personality disorder. Through their work, and as colleagues who communicate together on a regular basis, they began to discuss seeing patterns of behavioral and psychological disturbances that seemed to share common threads, no matter what the official diagnosis was, or official reasons for seeking treatment. These common “threads” were not unique at all, and were seen as quite ubiquitous in nature, for some individuals, but not for others Eventually, in a discussion designed to be part of peer supervision, the practice of running difficult cases by a trusted colleague or colleagues, they both almost simultaneously stated the obvious out loud. That the common threads of disturbance seen in many of their patients, and in their spouses, family members, etc. were astoundingly confined to gender lines! That these problems, so severe, and so difficult to both treat as professionals, or to deal with in personal relationships, were inextricably confined to females and females alone! The fact that this seemed obvious on one level, yet never previously discussed frankly and openly, in the true manner in which it exists, begged Dr. Watson and Dr. Fury to communicate what they had come to know, to the world. And thus, AWAP was born.
