A Drop of Light shares the inspiring, uplifting, and heartwarming story of the PrakashDeep School in Faridabad, India. Arriving barefoot and in tatters, most of the underprivileged children of PrakashDeep have spent their young lives working menial jobs to supplement their family income. Here, they regain the joys of childhood—with access to food, clothing, and high-quality education—for free.
PrakashDeep’s innovative and easily replicable educational model showcases how one elderly woman’s determination and simple actions have snowballed into a community wide movement that is transforming the trajectory of thousands of lives.
Through her vivid and touching chronicle, Dr. Savita Datt highlights the steps needed to break barriers to educating underprivileged children. A Drop of Light illuminates that it’s easier than we think to make a difference–to mobilize our communities to level the playing field between the haves and the have-nots–with just the initial investment of a bit of time and love."synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.
DR. SAVITA DATT was born during stressful pre-partition times and grew up in India with vivid nightmares of burning fires and muffled sounds of rushing, and shrieking whistles piercing the stillness of the nights. Her early years as a refugee sensitized her to the plight of displaced families and started her quest for conflict resolution and peace. After earning a PhD, she joined the Indian Institute for Defense Studies and Analyses and was later invited by Henry L. Stimson Center in the US on a confidence building measures program between India and Pakistan. Years of research led her to conclude that peace was not just an absence of war-it needed to start at the grassroots with educating the poorest of the poor. A Drop of Light chronicles her incredible journey when she started PrakashDeep under the shade of a tree with seven vagrant children.
