Synopsis

In The Coming Race a futuristic world is characterized by female dominance and technological progress in a subterranean dystopian world. The novel is considered to be a seminal dystopian science fiction classic by contemporary scholars. Dystopian Classic Editions publishes works of dystopian and utopian literature that have survived through the generations and been recognized as classics. A dystopian society is an imagined society in which the people are oppressed, however the government propagandizes the society as being a utopia or a perfect society. Typical themes in dystopian literature include public mistrust, police states, and overall unpleasantness for the citizens. Authors of dystopian works strive to present a worst-case scenario and negative depiction of the way things are in the story so as to make a criticism about a current situation in society and to call for a change. Each Dystopian Classic Edition selected for publication presents such a story.

Review

''The Coming Race' was enormously influential in its day and traces of its influence remain with us: the title of the book is namechecked in Bowie's 'Oh You Pretty Things' and Vril, the mysterious energy force utilised by the Vril-Ya, supplied the suffix for Bovril.' --The Independent

'His utopian novel, 'The Coming Race', is considered to be among the earliest science fiction novels, about a subterranean superior civilisation and its powers. In its day (and beyond), the book was tremendously influential as a novel of ideas, of scientific and philosophical speculation. In some quarters it was even taken as thinly disguised truth...The novel is utopian in that it examines the ideal life that the Vril-ya have developed for themselves. It wittily in many places juxtaposes that life with what nineteenth century humans have wrought.' --Fencer blog

From the Back Cover

The Coming Race is the crowning achievement of the genre of hollow earth fiction, in which a hero makes a perilous journey underground and discovers a superior race. The customs and political systems of these "aliens from inner space" are researched and contrasted with the deficient practices of old-fashioned, muddling, imperfect humanity. The subterranean race in this novel, the Vril-ya, are seemingly angelic creatures whose amazing powers come from their harnessing of a force called Vril. Bulwer's novel is unequaled for the depth of its intellectual explorations--inquiries into an astonishing range of social, political, scientific, religious, linguistic, and sexual issues that are enabled by the hollow earth plot.

The novel is accompanied and illuminated in this edition by a broad range of historical materials on evolution, electromagnetism, gender roles, and nineteenth-century science fiction.
