About the Author

Stuart Lon Cipinko was born in Chicago in 1947. He attended high school in Reseda, California and on graduating went to UC Riverside on a full Regent's scholarship. There he graduated with a BA in History; then he entered Riverside's graduate program, attaining his MA in Sociology. In the fall of 1971 he joined the Sociology department at Redlands University as an Assistant Lecturer whilst working on his PhD. For a complex of personal reasons, he did not complete his dissertation and in the summer of 1975 he and his then wife, also a Sociologist, moved to England. There he became an adjunct lecturer in Sociology for the University of Maryland: European Division, teaching on military bases. His wife took a tenure track post at Bradford. In 1989 he and his new wife moved to Bozeman, Montana, where he taught Sociology for two years as a full-time adjunct. A deep desire to return to Europe led to a change in teaching venues and a broadening of subject scope. The first high school gig was at Casablanca American School where he taught IB History and Psychology, and was head of the Social Studies Department for six years. From there to Louisville, Kentucky and St Francis High School where he taught AP level classes for a total of eight years with a year's break between in Dresden Germany. From Louisville to Ankara, Turkey and IB classes once more whilst acting as the Social Studies Department head. From Turkey to Tampico, Mexico where he taught AP classes in History, Psychology, Sociology and Economics. Finally, after two years in Mexico he and his wife returned to the US moving to Arizona. There he attempted to resume classroom teaching but found that the twinning of the annulment of student responsibility for their own achievement with holding teachers wholly responsible even as their work had been relegated to "guides on the side" was unbearable. Yet he never gave up his love of teaching, turning instead to an IB online teaching non-profit for focus and occupation. He died during his fifth year of teaching IB Psychology online. Sadly he died just before he was about to write a chapter on Social Psychology for a new IB Psychology textbook. Stuart Cipinko's death was a great loss to all of his former students and colleagues who each admired and respected his dedication to his life's work, his praxis: teaching.
