Making Baby Humans is a heartfelt and eye-opening journey for a single, gay man determined to become a parent. It starts with a provocative question from his toddler-aged sons, "Daddy, where is our mother?" Feeling that his short answer to their question would not do justice, he reveals to them the emotionally charged and complex story of how they came to be.The book chronicles his decision to become a parent, a tumultuous search for an egg donor, his turn to international IVF and surrogacy in the face of intolerable domestic rates, a tragic miscarriage, and a two month ordeal in Bangkok, Thailand to acquire his resulting babies. The story comes to climax with a dramatic exit from that country in the midst of growing political protests that would result in a military coup and crackdown on IVF and surrogacy programs in Thailand.Whether you are someone contemplating your own biological non-traditional path to parenthood, or one of millions curious to learn more, Making Baby Humans is an invaluable resource that will change your perspective forever.

Joseph Hahle was born in Guyana, South America to his parents who were missionaries there for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He spent his formative years in three different communities in Nebraska before attending his first year of college at the University of Nebraska, and then earning a BFA at the North Carolina School of the Arts, School of Filmmaking in Winston Salem, North Carolina. He worked for a year in local television in Estes Park, Colorado, and then moved to the Los Angeles area where he is an editor for reality television and occasional independent film to this day. In 2012, he embarked on a journey to become a biological parent, and in late 2013, those ambitions were rewarded with the birth of fraternal twin boys, Alexander and Maximus. His experience becoming a biological parent, as a gay single through IVF and international surrogacy, resulted in him becoming an author and resource for others on the topic. His parents, Dennis and Jeanie moved into his home in North Hollywood, CA in 2013 to help him care for his new children. In his free time, Joseph enjoys home improvement projects, creating exotic environments, and hiking.
