About the Author

About the artist: Donald S. Castro Don Castro was born in Chicago, Illinois. It was during his childhood in Chicago that art became an important part of his life. He attended weekend and evening classes at the Art Institute of Chicago from the age of nine until his late teens. Upon graduation from high school, a career in art was put on hold when he joined a major food manufacturing company which changed his focus from art to engineering. He retired as a Director of Manufacturing after thirty nine years of service. Throughout those years he had been active in art and has since been able to devote full time to his artistic endeavors. Sketching and photographing various subjects in his travels throughout the country provide the material from which he produces his work in his Naperville, Illinois home and studio. He works in a variety of media including: acrylics, oils, mixed media, pen and ink, watercolor and gouache. His subject matter encompasses a wide range of interests including: landscapes and botanical art and impressionism. A challenge occurred when a parishioner from his parish, St. Thomas the Apostle in Naperville, Illinois, asked if he would take on the commission of painting the Fourteen Stations of the Cross as a memorial to her deceased husband to be installed in the church meditation garden. Since completion of the commission in 2002, spiritual art has been his main focus. His Stations of the Cross have been printed in various sizes on tiles, paper, and canvas which have been shipped across the county and as far as Australia. During the past years, Don has been commissioned to do various projects. These requests are from individual clients and religious organizations, such as: the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago, Sisters of St. Joseph, Third Order of St. Francis, Sacred Heart Center for Peace, Resurrection Catholic Church in Wayne, Illinois, Christ Episcopal Church in Joliet, Illinois and the Tent of the Meeting in Arcadia, California. I hope that you enjoy coloring the pages of my spiritual art as much as I enjoyed drawing each of them.
