Synopsis

Excerpt from My Life's Pilgrimage: Introd, by Lord Burnham

The period over which Mr. Catling's reminiscences extend has been the brightest epoch in the annals of the British Press. This, therefore, is more than a personal record. It spans an era of momentous change. Personally I can look back on considerably over half-a-century of Fleet Street. With its life and work 1 had been associated, as a member of the staff of the Sunday Times, for several years before Mr. Catling came to London, and before the establishment of the Daily Telegraph. How much has happened since then! The vista of the past, which this volume recalls, Mr. Catling and I amongst living journalists have known by experience. In the nature of things it can have been given to very few indeed to spend over fifty years in close association with Fleet Street and its Press - as we have been. within the scope of "My Life's Pilgrimage" the political, social, intellectual, and material life of England has advanced by leaps and bounds. We have progressed from the tinder-box to electric light, from the stage coach to the flying machine; and journalism has reflected and kept pace with the social evolution. Its machinery, organisation, and sphere of action have improved and extended marvellously.
