About the Author

Richard Marcott was raised in Bradford, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1957 with a BS in engineering and a commission as an Ensign. His Academy experience plus twenty-eight years of active duty provided the fodder for his stories in The View From The Rigging: Memoirs of a Coast Guard Career. He served in land and sea billets on both coasts including command of the 95' patrol boat, Cape Knox, in Norfolk Virginia, and the 205' cutter, Chilula in Morehead City, North Carolina. He also commanded the Coast Guard LORAN Station in Okinawa, Japan. He taught in Officer Candidate School was the founding director of the Coast Guard Leadership and Management School, and the first Coast Guard officer to serve on the faculty at the National Defense University. He was Chief of the Training and Education Division at Coast Guard headquarters before retiring as Commanding Officer of the Training Center Petaluma, California with the rank of Captain. After a short stint as a training manager for the Bank of America, he returned home to a faculty position at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. His consulting firm conducted seminars for regional industries. He served on the board of directors of the Bradford School District and the Beacon Light Behavioral Health Systems. His hobbies were: singing barbershop harmony, making small furniture in his woodworking shop, and being involved with Community Theater. He appeared in eighteen main stage productions and directed four. He and his wife of fifty eight years, Carol, reside in Bradford as does their daughter, Kimberly, and their two grandchildren. He is proud to launch his first book at the age of eighty-one.
