Everyone knows what you can do with money but beyond that, for many people, things get murkier. How and who creates money, how banks operate, the role of the central bank, how the quantity of money in the economy is managed, etc are all interrelated parts of the monetary system picture that are not well understood by many citizens. I strive in this book to provoke the reader to think and consider facts about money, taxes, government spending and the national debt. My goal is to have the reader more informed and more confident of his or her knowledge of these subjects and to have immunity from the prolific misinformation often seen in the media. I have tried to make the facts easy to understand and I have included historical documents to illustrate and corroborate the facts that are presented. Our money system and tax system are old, based on the infrastructure we had a century ago. Our present monetary system is an artifact of the "gold is money" era while we are using a fiat money system started by FDR in 1933. We live now in a new age that offers new insights into the nature of money and new tools to provide the processes needed to manage the nation's money supply. All of thse subjects and more are covered in the book.

The author, Charles Layne, was born and raised on a family farm in rural Hanover County, VA. After graduating from Beaver Dam High School in 1948 he attended Randolph-Macon College, a liberal arts institution in Ashland, VA., earning a degree in mathematics in 1952 He spent a career in high technology research and development in government laboratories and in private businesses. His work involved systems engineering and electro-optical technologies. Following an early retirement at fifty-five, he consulted for a few years before becoming a serious retiree. As a retiree he traveled to many lands, meeting many people, to satisfy his travel lust. During his travels he met people in need and smart young people with an intense desire for college education but with no financial capability to pay tuition. Giving help to these people, he developed an active one on one charity operation in support of a refugee family in Liberia and young people in schools in the Philippines. In his later life, while still working, he developed an interest in monetary affairs and banking which lead him to publish his second book with the results of his studies in these areas.
