About the Author

I cultivated a positive attitude towards exercise from a very early age through the sport of Rugby League. From the age of sixteen, I took part in a formal retrograde strength programme, which caused me to develop multiple muscular imbalances from knee to shoulder through poor movement patterning. After joining the Royal Navy in 2002, I took part in intense calisthenics along with loaded speed marching. My relationship with exercise grew very strong, which I now know to be partly due to the chemicals (endorphins, dopamine etc.) released through such intense activity. My desire to be more purposeful within the Armed Forces led me to choose to retrain as a Royal Marine. However, this unfortunately led to my first visit to an orthopaedic surgeon for open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) surgery of the left fibular to treat a spiral fracture. After following an extremely beneficial prescription of exercise from the exercise rehabilitation staff, I regained full fitness and decided to follow a new path to become a Royal Navy Physical Training Instructor. Although I suffered further physical setbacks in the form of a ruptured ligament, further surgery (in which an anterior cruciate ligament was grafted from my hamstring) meant that I could continue on this path of regaining optimal fitness. Thankfully, I recovered sufficiently to complete the Physical Training course, only to be forced, some time later, to end my Rugby League playing days with a fractured vertebral pedicle at level C6, along with multiple degenerative changes in the lumbar region and multiple annular tears in discs L4-L5 and L5-S1 – no doubt acquired through poor technique and lack of movement education adherence causing overload and excessive tension. The reason for including the above details is that I believe that with the correct exercise technique and strengthening around the main structures of the anatomy, I could have possibly prevented some of the dysfunctional movement patterns that led to my instability during injury. My direct personal experience of severe injury gives me a powerful understanding of how prehabilitation is more useful than rehabilitation. This was my inspiration to write children's books and promote better movement from an early age.
