Synopsis

Alouise Trana Hillier was born in 1920 on a farm near the village of Kindred, North Dakota. She married during World War II and led a full and busy life raising five children, teaching remedial reading, and enjoying many hobbies and activities with her husband. At the age of 93, she joined a class in memoir writing at the retirement community where she now lives. This began a three-year process of reflection and writing that brought new understanding of some long-repressed memories and events. And there was a special surprise that revealed a secret friend who strongly influenced her life.

About the Author

Alouise Trana Hillier was born in 1920 on a farm near the village of Kindred, North Dakota. She attended the Kindred schools through her high school graduation, and then spent two years at Mayville State Teachers College, where she obtained a Standard Teaching Certificate for employment in North Dakota schools. On her first day of college she met her future husband, Kenneth Hillier, as she stepped off the train at the Mayville station. They were married during World War II. While raising five children, Alouise obtained a college degree in elementary education and taught remedial reading in the Portales, New Mexico schools. In 2001 the couple moved to Davis, California to be closer to their four daughters. Her memoirs are her first writing efforts beyond letters and occasional newspaper articles.
