When Alex Ferguson arrived in 1986, Manchester United hadn't won the league for 19 years, while rivals Liverpool were winning everything in sight. This is the story of how Ferguson and United set about putting that right. Mark Nevin looks at the match by match record of United v Liverpool during Ferguson's period in charge, focusing on the managerial decisions and key players that would bring 13 championships to Old Trafford within the Ferguson era. During that time, Ferguson saw off six Liverpool managers (one of them twice) and saw his team knock Liverpool not just off their perch, but out of the record books for league championship wins. He did it by spending less in the transfer market than Liverpool during his 26 years in charge, as well as including more than 30 home-grown players in his games against his rivals. Far from behind a rise to power purely based on money, Nevin points out that much of his success during the period came through shrewd investment in the transfer market and the most productive youth policy in English football. It's the remarkable story of a remarkable man, a remarkable club and a remarkable period of its history, told through 26 years of matches between Manchester United and Liverpool, the most famous and bitterly contested game in English football.
