That this ignorance is general among us can scarcely be questioned. For even a short-term student of Spanish to pass out with such ignorance uncorrected or merely replaced by shadowy grotesque conceptions hardly better - demonstrates a singularly unfortunate ratio of parts in the composition of his training in the subject. International jealousy and race antag onism spring, like personal ones, primarily from the distrust born of common ignorance. Some acquaintance with a foreign nation's history is indispensable for clearing the mind of the miasmatic fog generated in a vacuum of ideas; and the book which, like Pedro Sa'mlzez, contributes its share toward this bracing result deserves well of our consideration as a civilizing agency. It makes the subject matter appeal all the more strongly to our sympathies by setting before us another ex ample of how nations, like individuals, reap as they sow.
