Excerpt from The Lincoln Legend, and Other Programs
More useful still, high school classes in English, where poetry is sometimes considered a baneful requirement, may become aware of its meaningful values by this treatment. This is especially true of War and Peace. English and his tory teachers could even collaborate and present this as an all-school program in conjunction with the music depart ment and the audio-visual personnel.
History teachers who deal with the Lincoln Legend will find this program a very useful summary of or intro duction to the whole Lincoln story. Seventh or eighth graders could read at least some of the parts. Such a pro gram could be used extensively throughout the community any time early in February.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the evolution of ideas concerning war and peace through history. It opens with a look at the absolute monarchy of eighteenth-century France, then moves into the tumultuous years of the Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. Through poetry and prose, the author juxtaposes the excitement and fervor of these times with the simple innocence of children, as in Robert Southey's The Battle of Blenheim. The book ends with a condemnation of militarism by American poet James Russell Lowell, and a look at the continuation of autocracy in Czarist Russia. By showing the stark contrasts between periods of great social change and upheaval with those of relative peace and stability, this book encourages readers to examine their own beliefs about the nature of war and peace, and the ways in which these ideas have shaped the course of human history.
