Excerpt from A Geographical Dictionary, or Universal Gazetteer, Ancient and Modern, Vol. 1 of 2
A work of this kind must necessarily be defective, even if the best possible use were made of all the materials extant. But in a design embracing such a variety and multiplicity of detail, there will be many errors and defects, that must be attributed to inadvertance. The author is aware that this Gazetteer admits of great improvement. Imperfect, however, as it is, it has cost him no small labour; and it has been'his endeavour to render it useful and acceptable to the public. He has abundant reason to be satisfied with the manner in which it has heretofore been received, and he cherishes the hope, that in its present state, it will be found to carry with it such marks of his industry and fidelity.
