Having for many years been occupied in the interesting pursuit of searching the woods, hedge bottoms, ditches, stagnant ponds, and rivers, thirty or forty miles round Manchester, for the Shells peculiar to its locality; and having obtained specimens of nearly if not quite all, that exist within its limits, I have, agreeably to the wishes and suggestions of several of my friends, endeavoured to furnish such an account as will 'f afford Collectors the opportunity of finding for themselves any of the specimens herein described. With this view I have given the exact locality m which each species can be found.
