Plus équitable dans ses calmes et froides appréciations, l'histoire de ce siècle de lutte et d'enfantement dira qu'il y eut alors en France, comme dans le reste de l'europe deux peuples difl'érents dont l'existence simultanée était devenue impossible; deux peuples ennemis irréconciliables, constamment en présence, constamment en guerre ouverte, parce qu'ils différaient essen tlellement dans leurs croyances politiques, et que le but que chacun d'eux voulait atteindre était diamétralement opposé.
