The author details the process of using a high-resolution LADAR to scan and capture as-built data from an I-beam, and creates point cloud data to identify and locate the general pose, position, and orientation of the beam. Using two different approaches for identifying potential target objects, the author determines the I-beam's pose by examining the principal axes and using bounding boxes to compare the identified beam to an ideal I-beam model. The study demonstrates the possible uses of high-resolution LADAR and examines the difficulties presented by phantom pixels and mixed pixels in collected data. Through the use of reference spheres, the author registers the scans and SMS axes to one another and also compares the computed pose of the I-beam to measured poses.
