Excerpt from The First German Book: Grammar, Exercises, Conversation and Translation, With a List of Useful Words to Be Committed to Memory and Two Vocabularies
That a German Primer should, in less than five years, require a fourth edition, speaks for the favour this little volume has found with the scholastic profession, whom I again beg to thank for their kind support. To those who have asked me why I did not give full directions as to the declension of each noun, I point out the notes on pp. 149 and l54,at the head of the vocabularies. This book being an introduction to German, all intricacies of both rules and exceptions have been purposely avoided.
