Ce livre est une modeste contribution à l'histoire de la Révolution française je n'airien négligé, pour le faire avec conscience, et la bibliographie en témoignera. Il sera souvent question ici des choses religieuses le caractère sacerdotal de l'historien n'en est pas cause, mais bien celui d'un diocèse, qui, régi de temps immémorial, au temporel comme au spirituel, par son évêque-comte du Gévaudan, n'a guère fait, de 1790 au 18 brumaire an VIII, d'autre geste que celui de la Vendée.
Aussi, afin de n'avoir pas l'air d ecrire pour mon couvent, j'ai cité assez souvent desa documents, que j'aurais pu résumer le récit y perdra un peu en rapidité, mais la foi du lecteur y gagnera, comme aussi les historiens, qui pourront glaner Cà et là quelque pièce originale pour la synthèse de la Révolution.
