The color of pocket gophers varies greatly, ranging from a light brown or fawn color to a dark chocolate or black. The shade differs somewhat With species and locality, and some varieties may have two or more color phases._ Melanistic individuals are found, and one species, inhabiting the Oregon coastal area, is entirely black. White, or albinistic, individuals also are found, though rarely.
